Every country has their own educational system and Ghana is no different. The country of Ghana offers its citizens easy access to a quality education. In fact, there are over 12,300 primary schools in the country of Ghana, 5.400 secondary schools and 540 senior secondary schools. Ghana also has 20 plus colleges and vocational schools that offer students a chance for an education after secondary schools. This amount of available schools is a change over the country of Ghana 50 years ago. Fifty years ago Ghana only had one college and university and over 20 primary and secondary schools.
Here is a look at the educational system in Ghana.
Language of Education. All classes held in the country of Ghana are taught in English. This allows Ghana to bring in teachers from all over the world in order to meet the rising demand for teachers in the area.
Cost of Education. The country of Ghana funds student’s education in primary and secondary school. These schools are tuition free and the uniforms that are worn by students are provided by the government. In fact, Ghana devotes over 40% of its country’s budget to the educational system.
Primary Education. Students in Ghana start primary education at the age of six. Primary education in Ghana is a six year school system. This is where the students will learn the basics of education such as reading, writing, science and math.
Junior Secondary. After the students pass their first six years of primary education they are sent to a junior secondary school. At junior secondary school they will spend three years learning a variety of vocational and educational classes that will help them decide what to choose in the senior secondary classes.
Senior Secondary. Senior secondary is where the students in Ghana will prepare themselves for college education. Senior secondary is a mixture of core classes and some elective classes that the student chooses that will be related to their college or university education.
