The Kakum National Park in Ghana is a not-to-be-missed attraction on any visit to the country. The park is a rainforest that is surrounded by agricultural fields. This now small rainforest at one time extended from Ghana to Cote d’Ivoire as well as through Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Unfortunately this spectacular rainforest was decimated and reduced in size through the processes of settlement, farming and mining. The remaining forest is one of the last habitats for such endangered animals including forest elephants and Diana monkeys.

Within this park is a canopy walkway that is located approximately 100 feet off the ground. Because of this height you are able to get a very different view of the rainforest. You will observe many of the tropical birds living in this forest as they fly below your feet.

The walkway begins on level ground and then as you start your walk, you’ll see that the ground begins to slope away into a valley. The many bridges that make up this walkway are made of netting, wood planks and steel ropes and are connected by view platforms. The walkway is designed in a circular pattern that will bring you around and back to the starting point for a complete trip.

Because the bridge does sway slightly, some visitors may feel some trepidation but the sensation is definitely — however the bridge is definitely not for anyone with a fear of heights! Do be assured that professional designers, engineers and others were used during the construction to ensure safety.

You will be able to observe more than 300 types of birds, as well as about 500 types of butterflies. You may, if you are lucky, spot one of the elusive monkeys within the rainforest.

Consider using a local guide during your visit to the forest, so you can learn as much as possible about this national treasure.
