PROHIBITIONS AND RESTRICTIONS
Under the laws of Ghana, certain import or export items are either prohibited or restricted.

ABSOLUTE IMPORT PROHIBITIONS
1.   Narcotic Drugs;
2.   Ammunition imported by post;
3.   Mercuric medicated soap;
4.   Foreign cigarettes without warning notice;
5.   Toxic waste;
6.   Contaminated goods;
7.   Animals and carcasses as well as plants and seeds infected with disease;
Foreign soil;
Beads of inflammable celluloid or other similar substances;
Raw coffee imported overland or by inland water-ways;
Counterfeit notes and coins of any country;
Defamatory, obscene and similar articles or publications;
Knuckle dusters and life savers;
Goods bearing fraudulent trademarks or infringing any copy-right;
Dangerous weapons such as flick and paper knives;
Goods prohibited by any law in Ghana.


IMPORT RESTRICTIONS (CONDITIONAL)

With these imports, one needs a permit, license or certificate from the appropriate organization prior to the importation of the items.

  1. Gold coins, current in the United Kingdom (license from Minister of Finance).
  2. Rough or uncut diamonds (license from Minister of Finance)
  3. Arms and ammunition (Permit, Ministry of Interior);
  4. All communication equipment (Frequency Board);
  5. Drugs (Ministry of health, Certificate);
  6. Cinematography films through any port of entry other than Tema, Takoradi or Accra Airport (Apply to Commissioner of CEPS).
  7. Goods bearing designs in imitation of money. License from Minister of Finance).
  8. Handcuffs (License from Minister for Finance).
  9. Machines for duplicating keys (License from Minster of Finance).
  10. Condensed or evaporated milk containing less than 8% by weight of milk fat and dried or milk power containing less than 26% by weight of milk fat (Commissioner of CEPS).
  11. Gambling machines (Ministry of Interior);
  12. Live plants and animals. (Ministry of Agriculture);
  13. Nets and traps for animals (Ministry of Agriculture);
  14. Mercury (Ministry of Trade, Inspector of Mines).


EXPORT PROHIBITIONS

  1. Goods prohibited by any law in Ghana;
  2. Narcotics;
  3. Parrots;
  4. Ghanaian currency in excess of ยข5,000.00

EXPORT RESTRICTIONS

  1. All antiques (need a permit from Museums and Monuments Board);
  2. Precious Minerals (Precious Minerals Marketing Corporation);
  3. Wildlife (Department of Game and Wildlife);
  4. Live Plants (Ministry of Agriculture);
  5. Dangerous Weapons (Ministry of Interior).
